Wilhelmine (Riedesel) Schneider (1829)

Wilhelmine Riedesel was born October 22, 1829 in Wunderthausen. She was the oldest of eleven children of Gabriel and Anna Elisabeth (Müsse) Riedesel of the house known as Bergmanns or Gabels. Six of the children eventually went to America (of the eight who grew to adulthood).

Along with the family of Johann Georg Schneider, she came to America on the ship Amazone and landed in New York on May 31, 1848. She married Johann Georg Schneider Jr. in Bucyrus, Ohio on June 24, 1848.

By 1851 the Schneiders had relocated to the Wheatland, Iowa area. Wilhelmine bore a total of 15 children. The first two were born in Ohio while the rest first saw the light of the world in Iowa. She was known as Minnie. They lived out their days there on a farm of 160 acres in Section 22 of the Spring Rock Township of Clinton County. George died there January 14, 1883 while Minnie died on January 26, 1897. Of course they are buried at St. Paul’s Cemetery in Wheatland. They had an exceptionally large family but many children died as young adults.
