Riedesel Louise [Female]
This marriage is documented but it is only a guess that she is a daughter of William and Bertha.
As of 1880, he was working as tailor and they lived in the city of Chicago. By 1900 they were divorced and Dora/Dorothea was living back in Kane County.
This Friedrich Riedesel was born around 1816 near the city of Stralsund in western Pomerania (Vorpommern). One secondary source pinpoints his birthplace as Glewitz (a village near Stralsund); there are other references to a a place called Campe/Camper/Kamper which is at best a wide spot in the road. Local church records are spotty and have not been recorded by the LDS. We do know that the family name existed in this area by the 1500s and that the spelling varied between Riedesel and Rietesel. I have found no birth record for him so do not know any of his ancestry.
An 1863 passenger list (Hamburg to Quebec) lists this family with children Caroline 23, Sophie 14, Wilhelm 9, and Marie 5. The ship was the 'Main' out of Hamburg departing on May 2, 1863. This record gives his former residence as "Camper" which was a tiny place close to the tiny place of Nehringen. The oldest daughter, Johanna, was not on this ship but is probably the "Anna" in an 1870 Census record. The ship was the "Main" and left Hamburg on May 2, 1863.
Like many other emigrants from the Stralsund area, they settled in Dundee, Kane County, Illinois west of Chicago. Who they already knew there, we don’t know, but it is a safe bet that they were part of a chain migration. Both Friedrich and Marie disappear from public records I have between 1880 and 1900. Secondary sources I have seen give her place of birth as Nossendorf/Demmin, also in western Pomerania. I have the names of five children but more were likely.

William George Riedesel was born on June 24, 1922, in Walcott, Iowa, the son of George and Ella (Ehrke) Riedesel. He married Sara Fuller in 1949 in Muscatine. She preceded him in death in 1979. He then married Evelyn Anderson in 1983 in Davenport. She preceded him in death in 2004.
William worked as a Homebuilder and Architect for Mel Foster for 50 years, retiring in 2001. He was also a Realtor in the Quad-City Area for 50 years. He received his B.A. degree at Augustana College.
William served as past president for the Homebuilders Association. He also served as Treasurer Emeritus and Past Potentate for the Kaaba Shrine, Davenport. He was proud and grateful to be a 30-year member of A.A., and for his friendships at Central Discussion of the Bettendorf Group where he conducted a class every Wednesday morning for 25 years. He served on the Davenport Civil Service Commission and was active in various Y.M.C.A. organizations. He was also a life-time member of the Davenports German American Heritage Center. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion.
Survivors include his sons, George (Ginger) Riedesel, Richard (Judith) Riedesel and David Riedesel, all of Davenport; three grandchildren; and a brother, Paul (Patricia) Riedesel, and a special friend, Ruth Reynolds of Davenport. He was preceded in death by his parents, both wives, a daughter, Kathy Riedesel, and son, William Riedesel.

Ruth M. Riedesel, formerly of Bennett and Tipton, Iowa, passed away at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2008, in Fejervary Nursing Home, Davenport, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at Peace Church of Christ United in Bennett on Monday, April 28, at 10:30 a.m. Visitation will be held Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. at Fry Funeral Home, Tipton. Burial will be at Inland Cemetery near the farm where Ruth and husband, Ernest, lived and farmed for many years. Ruth was born July 21, 1916, in Orange Township near Waterloo, to Clarence and Elizabeth Reitz Hamer. She attended schools there till her graduation from Orange High School and University of Northern Iowa with an elementary teaching certificate. She taught the primary grades at Bennett Community Schools for three years and one year at Lone Tree Schools. Ruth was also employed for a short time at Rock Island Arsenal during World War II. Ruth married Ernest Riedesel from Bennett on April 16, 1944. They farmed and raised two sons, Robert and Ronald, and one daughter, Jean. Ruth returned to teaching kindergarten for 16 years at Bennett Community Schools before retiring. Ruth's love and talent for music led her to service of 34 years as organist at Peace Church of Christ United in Bennett. She and her husband, Ernest, sang and accompanied numerous weddings, funerals and other community events. Ruth volunteered for many church and community groups and shared her time whenever needed. She loved flowers and gardening through her life. Ruth and Ernest were married nearly 50 years. Ruth is survived by her son, Ronald Riedesel and wife Joyce, of Aurora, Colo.; daughter, Jean (Riedesel) Hatch and husband Jim, of Georgetown, Texas, and son, Robert Riedesel and wife Marilyn, of Davenport, Iowa; granddaughter, Wendy (Riedesel) Schlagetter and husband Matt, of Englewood, Colo., grandson, Greg Riedesel of Aurora, Colo., granddaughter, Sara (Riedesel) Verdick and husband Todd, of Bettendorf, Iowa, and grandson, Scott Riedesel and wife Kendra, of Fairfax, Iowa; and sister, Doris Jean Miller and husband Lyle and family from Woodston, Kan. Ruth was proud great-grandmother to Carson and Taylor Schlagetter, Jessalyn, Arissa and Lyra Riedesel and Gavin and Kade Verdick. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Robert and Mervin, and husband, Ernest.
His birthplace was known as Diedenhofen in German, but is now called Thionville as Alsace-Lorraine is again French. Came to the US on February 27, 1904 on the S.S. Vaderland out of Antwerp. His destination is given as Chicago and the home of his sister, Maria Roth. In 1913, he appears to have gone back to Europe and returned in the company of his sister-in-law Emma and two nephews. They were on the ship Patricia out of Cuxhaven and landed in New York. Both their "Nationality" and "Race" are listed as German. Unlike the 1904 record, his place of birth is given as "Paris, France." It is conceivable that this was not Peter at all but his brother John (husband of Emma), but the age seems to match Peter's. He was 5'7" with light hair and eyes.
Inducted into the army in World War I at which time his residence was listed as Kent, Ohio. He was wounded severely enough to qualify for a disability pension. Farmed in Oklahoma until the 1930s, but moved on to Chehalis, Washington.
Living in rented quarters with her three younger daughters as of 1900. She was divorced and working as a dressmaker. One other child was living (presumably Martha), but she had borne three others who were not then alive. She immigrated in 1862.
The state record of her death states that her father was "Boost Abel." The first name is unlikely but the clear implication is that she was born an Abel, with Roast being an earlier married name.

Referred to as Clara Beth in her brother George's obituary.
Known in the U.S. as John Henry. While his parents were definitely German, he was born in France. Prior to his emigration he was working in a factory near Frankfurt. About 1905, he married Emma Jacobsen who was a native of the Schleswig area in northern Germany. How they met or where they married I do not know.
On April 16,1909 he arrived at the port of New York aboard the "President Grant" under the name "Johann"; he was bound for Woodward, Oklahoma. The Ellis Island records show some of the family returning on March 30, 1913 aboard the ship “Patricia” out of Cuxhaven, Hamburg. What is very curious is that the adult male of the party is listed as Peter; the age is not clear; the adult female was Emma, and there were sons Heinrich and Albert. John’s brother Peter had also come to America. Did he also return to Europe, and then come with his brother’s family in 1913?
In any case, the family of John and Emma settled in Oklahoma where five more children were born. Between 1923 and 1930 they moved to the Westfield, New York area where the family has remained. He had a dairy farm. He was naturalized in 1913. We have a photograph of him taken in Frankfurt which calls him "von Riedesel." That appelation is also known within his family. However, he was assuredly a commoner like most of us.

He was born Jan. 26, 1917, in Charleston, Okla., the son of John and Emma Jacobsen Riedesel.
He attended schools in the Oklahoma and in the Westfield area. He was a dairy and grape farmer for more than 50 years, retiring in 1998. He had also been employed by the former Standard Shops Inc, where he built forms for the boxes used to transport guided missiles. He was a member of the Lombard, the Westfield granges, LOGIC, a charter member of the National Grape Co-op, the Farm Bureau, and Dairylea Milk Producers Co-op. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Westfield for more than 55 years.
He enjoyed gardening, bird watching, his family and spending his winters in Florida.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Beatrice Hayner Riedesel, whom he married June 18, 1945, in Westfield; two daughters: Wilma Benjamin of Westfield and Barbara Wetzel of Erie; two sons: Robert and Phillip, both of Ripley; six grandchildren: Stephen Riedesel of Ripley, James Riedesel of Dunkirk, Lisa Lanphere of Auburn, Ind., Karen, Catherine and John Riedesel, all of Westfield; a great-grandson; several stepgrandchildren and step great-grandchildren; a sister, Ann Morehouse of Eustes, Fla.; and two brothers: William and Walter Riedesel, both of Westfield.
He was preceded in death by an infant sister; and four brothers: Albert, Alfred, Arthur and Henry Riedesel.

WESTFIELD - Daniel C. Riedesel, age 61, of Washington St., Westfield, was called home to his Lord on Thursday, March 31, 2011 at home surrounded by his family, following a three year battle with cancer.
Daniel was born on June 12, 1949 in Westfield, NY, the son of the late Arthur P. Riedesel and Virginia M. (Haskin) Riedesel, of Eustis, Florida.
Dan was a Westfield resident most of his life, having lived in Mayville, Dunkirk and Fredonia, prior to returning to Westfield in 1996. He graduated from Westfield Academy and Central School with the class of 1968 and enlisted in the US Air Force. He volunteered to serve in Vietnam attaining the rank of sergeant. Following his return, he married the love of his life, Elizabeth Meyers on June 2, 1973 in West-field, NY.
Dan had been employed by Mogen David Wine Corp. in Westfield and later went on to Fieldbrook Farms Ice Cream in Fredonia where he retired from in 2008 after 25 years of service. He enjoyed collecting model cars, NASCAR and #24 Jeff Gordon, the New York Yankees, as well as sports of all kinds.
A devoted Christian, Dan loved reading his bible and spending time with friends and family, especially his wife, children and grandchildren, each of whom he loved dearly. Dan's family wishes to express their gratitude to his "2nd family" at the VAMC in Buffalo. The doctors and nurses there took exceptional care of Dan for the last three years.
Mr. Riedesel was an active member of Lake Erie Baptist Church of Brocton; he loved his church and church family. He was also a member of the John W. Rogers Post 327, American Legion, of Westfield.
Besides his Mother of Florida, he is survived by his wife: Elizabeth (Meyers) Riedesel, his daughter, Kathryn Crespo of Fredonia, his three sons: John Riedesel of Carthage, NC, Kenneth Riedesel of Falconer, NY and Mark Riedesel of Dunkirk, NY. Dan was the proud grandfather of Holly and Lydia Riedesel, Alyssa, Forest and Sean Crespo, Luke, Kira and Matthew Riedesel.
He is further survived by his two brothers; Paul Riedesel of Canandaigua, NY and Ricky Riedesel of Eustis, FL.
He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur, his sister, Susan Lynn Riedesel and his brother John W. Riedesel.

WESTFIELD - John W. Riedesel, age 65, of Westfield, NY died Friday March 25, 2011 after a lengthy illness.
Born January 26, 1946 in Westfield to Virginia Haskin Riedesel of Eustice, Florida and the late Arthur Riedesel. Beloved husband of Peggy Beck Riedesel. Loving father of Jody Burdett (Marty) of Westfield and Blair Riedesel also of Westfield. Best grandpa to Jeffery, Matthew, Valerie, and Lauren Burdett and Sierra Riedesel. Brother of Paul Riedesel (Late Diana) of Canandaigua, NY; Daniel Riedesel (Elizabeth) of Westfield, Ricky Riedesel (Vera) of Orlando, FL and the late Susan Riedesel. Also survived by aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Mr. Riedesel was an over the road truck driver for Gypsum Express. He enjoyed playing cribbage, camping, boating and drag racing. He was a Master fixer.
Also a 44 year member of the Westfield Moose. Most of all John enjoyed spending time with his family.
Lives in Westfield, NY.
