Came to America with parents and seven siblings on the "Lord Brougham" which docked in New York on July 6, 1869. The arriving passenger list names the boy his age as Johannes. My guess is that, like many German boys, he was given that as a rarely-used first name. German records are clear that Friedrich Wilhelm went to American with his family in 1869, and he is well-documented in America.

Born in Schäfers Haus in Wunderthausen. It is almost certain that he came to America with the extended Riedesel family from Haase house in 1845. The ship's arrival in New York is recorded on June 7; the ship name also appears to have been "New York." As the youngest of nine children his prospects in the village were limited. I find no trace of him in Crawford County, Ohio in 1850 where the Riedesel clan settled. There is a possibility that he died in the same epidemic around 1847-1848 that claimed several others.

Other researchers claim he died in 1869 back in Wunderthausen, but that is false. The deceased had the same name but was born in 1818 in a different house.

Born in Langes Haus in Wunderthausen. Went to America in the Apollo, landing in New York out of Bremen on July 7, 1835. He was another of those whose children modified the family name. There were other Wunderthäuser who settled in Denver, Iowa, but this family spent a lot of time in Ohio first.

He was born in Langes Haus in Wunderthausen. Records show that he went to America on the ship "Themis" which landed in Baltmore out of Bremen on July 24, 1834.

There is some false information out there about him. It was not him who fathered a child by Catherine Magdalena Weller back in Wunderthausen, but a Georg Hermann Homrighausen. Nor is there a baptismal record for a daughter Elisabeth (or anyone else!) born in Wunderthausen on July 20, 1834. If he did marry an Elisabeth Alderman, she was not a Wittgensteiner. An Elisabeth Homrighausen married a Cronebach and had a family, but I am not at all certain of the relationships.

He is the earliest verifiable ancestor of all the Riedesels of Wittgenstein and of almost all American Riedesels. His name is sometimes rendered as Heyrich or Henrich, but local experts affirm that it was not "Heinrich." He was the tenant in the house called "Herjes" in the small hamlet of Melbach. He served for several years as a coachman to the Count in Berleburg during the 30 Years War (1618-1648) and documents say that his house stood empty for five years. He had returned by 1642. While he was a commoner subject to the Count, various signs suggest that the family was of somewhat higher status than most. It is not certain that his father "Heyrich Riedesel" preceded him at Herjes, but it is very likely.
