Emigrated to Texas in 1849 by way of New Orleans on the ship Julius out of Bremen. The ship arrived on October 31, 1849, and his occupation was listed as a shoemaker. They lived around Yorktown in De Witt County. 1860 Census gave the value of his real estate as $700 and personal estate as $450 (Page 70/88 De Witt County). Listed as a saddler.

Born in the house called Försters am Lotzenberg in Wundethausen. He was probably on the ship Johann Lange out of Bremen that landed in New York on September 23, 1857. He was already 35 when he married the widow Caroline (Knebel) Henze. They apparently lived in Monroe County, Prairie du Long township until at least 1880 (when they are recorded in the Census under the name "Ritt"). But by the late 1880s they are mentioned in the records of what is now St. John's United Church of Christ in Smithton, IL. Known as John or Johananes.

In 1870, he owned real estate worth $4,500--a substantial sum. That Census lists a daughter "Mina" who was 5 years old; this corresponds to Katherine who was born in 1865. The same Census lists a 2-year old "Catherine", who should be Carolina according to family records. Living them was a 36-year old Henry "Knoebel" (Knebel), most likely Ludwig Heinrich Knebel (*Nov 4, 1834 in Wunderthausen in Schwarze house).

He is believed to have come to America in 1852 but no ship's record has been found. Listed in the 1860 Census as a saddle tree maker; real estate value $250 and personal estate of $100. By 1870 his real estate was valued at $400 but the personal estate was still $100. They were in the 3rd Precinct of De Witt County and at the Clinton Post Office. He was still a saddle tree maker. In his old age (probably around 1910), he sold his property and went to live with his youngest daughter, Louise, in California.

August was a member of Charles Eckhardt's York Town Hulan Reserve Company during the Civil War.
