Following is as complete a list as we have of the Riedesels who emigrated to the United States from Germany in the 1800s and early 1900s. When a name appears as a link, that means there is an Adobe Acrobat "pdf" file detailing their known ancestry.  Unless otherwise noted, they were prepared by Paul Riedesel using Family Tree Maker for Windows software. More will be added as they become available.

If you are not sure where your family fits in, please contact us at info@riedesel.org.

Then married Jacob Strable (1831-?). Two children are known but there may have been others:

From Berleburg

From Erndtebrück

From Diedenhofen in Lorraine

These siblings (and one half-brother) come from a branch of the Riedesels that lived in villages near Marburg, Germany, for several generations. Their father moved to what is now French Lorraine but was then the German district of Lothringen. They moved on to the U.S. while others remained in what are now dominantly French areas.

German Origins Not Known

Friedrich Riedesel (c1817-??). Went to Canada with his wife, Mary, and family in 1862. Moved on to Kane County, Illinois and the town of Dundee about 1863. The 1870 Census gives his birthplace as "Prussia", which did rule Wittgenstein by then. But then Maria Caroline's place of birth is listed as "Hanover" in a later Census. I suspect that Friedrich was a brother to Charles (below). The following four are the known children of Friedrich and Mary.

Charles Riedesel (c1819-??) is known through an 1880 Census record from Chicago where he is listed as "Charles Riedseal." However, two of the children in the household have the same names and ages as two people listed in later marriage records as "Riedesel." There was no wife listed in 1880. Insofar as the older daughter is named Friedrika ("Rikka" in the Census record), I would not be surprised if Charles (probably born Karl) was the brother of Friedrich Riedesel in Kane County. Similarly, Friedrich had a son whose full name was "Carl Johann Wilhelm" though he went by William (see above). It is pure guesswork that John is a son of Charles.
